FireSpinner and all her Obsessions

knitting, spinning, obsessing…

I think Karma lost our address February 11, 2009

Well, obviously by that title this post probably won’t be too happy.  However, in the hopes that all of my troubles will magically go away, I start with the happy stuff.

First off, meet Miss Elinor Rigby Dashwood:

Or since that is an awfully long name for such an itty bitty kitty, Ellie will suffice.  She just joined our family on Friday and has successfully wiggled her way into our hearts.

Next up, would be school, which is going pretty well.  I like paralegal.  I’ve missed a couple of classes though due to the drama that’s supposed to be magically disappearing right now, so I don’t think my professor is very happy with me.

Next is knitting.  Wow, I haven’t posted knitting in ages.  Well, let’s start with stuff I’ve finished.

Socks that were meant for me, but Aunt Beth showed particular interest as I was knitting them up:
Aunt Beth's socks
Yarn: Collinette Jitterbug
Pattern: Jitterbug Ballband Pattern

Mitts that were a belated X-mas present to my brother’s gf Brittany:
brit's Mitts
Yarn: My own handspun
Pattern: Modified Maine Morning Mitts

Mitts for a friend of my mom’s:
Maine Morning Mitts
Yarn: Malabrigo
Pattern: Maine Morning Mitts (I fell in love with this simple pattern, it was perfect for last minute x-mas presents)

Snowmen, knit up on Chirstmas Eve for my Aunt Sue who is OBSESSED with Snowmen:
Yarn: Mix of Iron Horse Farm Mohair and Icelandic blend, handspun, and Malabrigo
Pattern: ummm I’ll have to get back to you.

Those are the finished ones and here are my WIPs:
Mystic Star Shawl KALBad Wolf socksP2080009

First, the Mystic Star Shawl KAL, that’s only Clue 1, I have to sit down and do Clue 2 and 3. The second is the second of my Blackrose Socks, renamed to the Bad Wolf Socks because of all the Rose references (pattern name: Blackrose, colorway name: Gothic Rose) and the Tardis in the background of that specific picture. The third is my mom’s Shoalwater Shawl that I’ve been working on since before Christmas, but and almost done with.

I also joined a sock club last night at my knit night. It’s the first one Debbie, my knitting mentor, has been able to host since she got very sick. It was very nice to see her again and see that she was doing well.

I’ve also booked a much-needed vacation to Georgia to visit the grandparents. I am so close to them and although, I only saw them about a year ago, it was for a very last-minute long weekend to visit the colleges I was accepted to near them, so much of my visit was spend in the car. This time, I’m flying down on March 13 and flying back on March 23! That’s a whole ten days! It’s my Spring Break from school, so imgine how surprised I was to find tickets for less than $200 roundtrip. I’m thinking about renting a car while I’m down there to make a visit to Nashville to visit one of my friends that moved there about a year ago.

I’ve also replaced my iPod recently, with a new red 16 gig iPod Nano. Mine finally died its last death, this was a bit of a downgrade, gig-wise, but honestly, do I need all of my audiobooks all of the time, or at least all of the sequels? Oh, and I bought a beautiful pair of pointy-toed pumps marked down by my bff at Macys. One of my members from the credit union works there, so I say there’s a dent in the leather and he marks them damaged and voila my $90 shoes turn into $70 shoes. Which still seems steap, but these babies are worth it. CK, black leather, pointy-toed, kitten healed pumps! Gorgeous!

So, I think I’ve finally gotten through all the good… now onto my family drama. Well, my brother’s been cutting and we think my dad might be cheating on my mom. *Not having to do with the psychic!* I swear. But my brother found a cellphone in my dad’s desk that didn’t look familiar. We poked through it and found a whole 5 phone numbers, the entries were only initials and the text from K was “I love you!” I’m still digging around. I believe it could definitely be true, but I don’t want to make an already precarious family situation worse by making such awful accusations, without being 100% sure.

Meta Post of Knitting December 18, 2008

Well, I promised a knitting update and here it is:

My Rosalie hat:

Rosalie Hat

Based on a hat that Rosalie wore during one of the cafeteria scenes:

I have shared it on Ravelry and people are actually interested in a pattern!!! It will need a bit of reworking: more lacy and more slouchy. But still, the idea of designing a pattern and sharing it with others is something I never thought I’d be doing when I began knitting 4 years ago.

These are my goth-y gauntlets:

The pattern is Twisted Stitches’ Armwarmers.  And I wear them very often.  I get a lot of compliments on them as well.

Um, I just finished a pair of Maine Morning Mitts, but I don’t have a picture yet.  They are for my mom’s friend for Christmas.  And I really enjoyed the pattern so I decided to use the rest of the yarn that I had from my cousins’ hats last year to make matching Mitts, but I just finished one and doubt I’ll have enough left for a second one.

The other MAJOR Christmas present.  The only one I had really intended on making is my mom’s Shoalwater Shawl.  Here is a WIP Pic:

Mom's Shoalwater Shawl

Oh, and the Winter Twilight Mitts WIP pic: (yea I’ve been a bit obsessed with fingerless mitts lately)

Winter Twilight Mitts

I overdyed the secondary yarn (the not-blue one) from a green and orange colorway with grape Kool-Aide, but instead of a dark purple I got more of a purpley, greeny, orangy, color.

Ok, well I oughtta get back to my knitting and napping. I have the newest version of Sense and Sensibility in the DVD player and some meds to take.

So, I felt like writing and saying that I have been uber-busy.  For somebody who said they weren’t going to do any holiday knitting, I’ve got a lot of holiday knitting to get done and some things I have finished.  My classes are almost over.  I have one more final on Friday.  I’m going through a particularly low valley mood-wise.  The stress of school and holidays and teeth (emergency root canal anybody?) has seriously gotten to me.

I will hopefully post again tomorrow with pictures and lists and stories and stuff.  I have a day off that will include a smidge of sleeping in and another trip to the dentist’s office, then home for some serious napping.

Productivity is good July 6, 2008

I feel so productive.  I’ve been crafty all weekend.  On Thursday, I think, I casted on a pair of socks out of handspun.  On Friday, I sewed pillow covers.  On Saturday, I sewed a cover for the armrest in the Jeep.  And today I spun 4 oz of roving.  I really wish I had pictures to share, but the camera battery is dead and even if it wasn’t I don’t really want to upload to the ‘rents computer.

HP4 is on!  It’s turned into my favorite cause it has Edward/Cedric and the Doctor in it.  But I’m probably going to go read instead.  I’m thoroughly engrossed in The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield.  I’ll watch HP later, I’ve been planning a movie marathon soon.

Yea, that’s kind of all I got right now.  Oh, and I desperately want to cast on a sweater or vest or even… a sweater vest.  Well, see ya!

wow, its been a while July 1, 2008

It sure has been a while. I’ve been MIA over here, mostly cause I’ve been Plurking my bum off. Let’s see the car broke but now its fixed, dad fixed the Jeep’s brakes too. He had an interview today and went to a job fair *crosses fingers* this is a good start. My laptop (aka Lappy497 as of late) died the other day. Hopefully its fixable, but I don’t really know where to start. Chances are I’m going to have to take out an extra thousand when I apply for school loans to buy a new one. I guess thats it really… OH WAIT, my work bff left me! She quit the Credit Union and went to State Street in Boston. It was a very sad day. Oh, I’ve also been nursing a horrible Fan-girl crush on Doctor Who as of late.

On the knitting side of life, I’ve made some progress…

I finished my June Twilight Sock Club socks:
entangled socks

Pattern: Entangled, Yarn: Knit Me Up Sock, Colorway: Edward

I finished some baby stuff for a coworker who’s expecting a little boy next month:
baby stuff

Yarn: Bernat Organic Cotton

Here’s some handspun in a kind of sort of sock weight:

Roving: J.Knits, Colorway: Columbus

Alright, well, I’m going to go watch some tv and knit a bit. I’ve cast on some Jaywalkers in that new Ball and Skein yarn I got at Mass Sheep and Wool.

Mass Sheep and Wool Fair May 25, 2008

I went to the Massachusetts Sheep and Woolcraft Fair yesterday with my dad. It was a lot of fun. I was really good, although I was really surprised by how much of an enabler my dad was! I don’t even remember ever telling him I wanted a new wheel, but he was like “Why don’t you try out this wheel? How about this one?” We stayed at the HitchHiker booth for quite a while. They are very cool little wheels, but I don’t think its for me. Both me and dad were fascinated by the Journey Wheel Charkhas. Jonathon was sooo nice and talked to my dad about the craftsmanship while I stood there gaping at the prettiness and trying to figure out how it works. Really, it was very fun. Smaller than I thought it would be, but probably a good intro before I go to Rhinebeck. Cause I still want to go to that one. Maybe even more now. And I really want a new wheel after playing with all those other ones. It put me in the mood to spin again today. I did for a couple of hours until my drive band broke. grrr… So here’s the loot I picked up yesterday:

Mass Sheep & Woolcraft Loot!

Pretty! I was so good! Now, I’m going to work on some more sock knitting!

I’m getting smart May 16, 2008

I got the mailer about the Webs Tent Sale this weekend. 20% off wheels among other things. I have been hemming and hawing all night about whether I want to buy a Ladybug or not. I came up with a list. Well, two actually.

Why I shouldn’t buy a new wheel:

  • That’s money that should be going towards my down payment on a car.
  • I will have to put it on a credit card and I try not to do that.
  • Next fall, I’m going to be so busy with school, I won’t have much time for spinning.
  • I haven’t tried out the Ladybug enough to know that it is the wheel I want.

Why I should buy a new wheel:

  • I made a huge concession recently and deserve to spoil myself.
  • I can’t stand my Columbine anymore. And because of that, I barely spin at all.
  • I really really want one!

No, I decided I will not buy a new wheel for right now. I’m getting smart.
